Resonance @ First Church Berkeley: Peter and the Wolf
Join the First Church Festival Orchestra for a special presentation of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" on Saturday, March 17, conducted by First Church Music Director Derek Tam.
In this symphonic fairy tale for children, a narrator tells a children's story while the orchestra illustrates it. The unique voices of different instruments represent the characters in the story, including a duck, a bird, a cat and of course Peter and a wolf.
This is Prokofiev's most frequently performed work, and one of the most frequently performed works in the entire classical repertoire.
In this special event, part of the First Church Resonance performance series, the piece will be performed three times, each time with the narrator speaking a different language:
10:30 a.m.: English (Rachel Bauman, Minister of Community Life, First Church Berkeley)
11:30 a.m.: Chinese (Monica Xu, former reporter, World Journal)
12:30 p.m.: Spanish (Marci Valdivieso, singer and activist)
First Church Berkeley, a premier venue for music performance in the East Bay, has created its own exciting series of chamber and orchestral music concerts featuring artists from the Bay Area and beyond.
Music has always been an important part of the life of First Church. It touches the soul and gives sound and voice to ineffable mystery. We sing together and share our musical gifts. We also delight in the special talents of artists from within our community and beyond.
Derek Tam, First Church's Director of Music, curates this exciting series.
First Church is on the south side of the UC Berkeley campus, just west of Telegraph Avenue. It is a few blocks from the Downtown Berkeley BART and is accessible by several bus lines. Some paid parking is available in the church parking lot.
